Other locations being used by the trust for the service include Buckfast Abbey, the House of Marbles in Bovey Tracey, Sainsbury's in Dawlish, and Morrisons in Teignmouth. Clarke stated her recent mammogram appointment was held at Buckfast Abbey instead of the town's main car park, which had hosted the mobile unit for 25 years. Teignbridge Council requested the NHS pay thousands of pounds to relocate the breast screening unit to the car park for its two-week stay.
The NHS secured space at Buckfast Abbey after a cancellation, and Clarke warned that without this opportunity, the screening unit might not have visited Buckfastleigh this year. She mentioned at least two women whose cancers were detected during the service in the town. Clarke also expressed private outrage over the council’s actions, stating she had received numerous messages of disgust from individuals.
A Teignbridge District Council spokesperson noted that requests to waive parking charges were considered on a case-by-case basis. The council stated it had sought the maximum available reduction under its policy and was reviewing its approach to parking fees and concessions, while remaining supportive of health and wellbeing initiatives.
